The Boliden Mining Company (Boliden) first staked exploration permits in two areas in 1942. Nickel-rich sulphide minerals were discovered in some of the serpentinites in the Caledonides in the 1950′s. In the 1970′s, Professor P.G. Khilsted at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, conducted metallurgical research on extracting nickel from the peridotite and serpentinite. In 1974-1976, the Boliden Mining Company carried out sampling and minor drilling on Vinberget and on parts of Rönnbäcksnäset. Test mining of 4,000 tonnes was carried out in an open pit followed by metallurgical testwork including continuous pilot scale campaigns. Boliden got two exploitation concessions granted in 1982, but withdrew from these concessions in 2003. Since 2005, Nickel Mountain has acquired seven exploration permits for the Rönnbäcken area.
Following a major drill campaign of 16,000 metres launched in 2008, Nickel Mountain Resources released its first independent NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate (NI 43-101 Compliant Resource). The company’s activities in 2009 centred on the completion of a NI 43-101 Technical Report on the Preliminary Assessment (PA) of the Rönnbäcken Nickel Project (NI 43-101 Technical Report). In 2010, the company released an updated NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate (NI 43-101 Mineral Resource Estimate), and has launched work on a Pre-feasibility study. During 2010-2011 a second major drill campaign of 13,000 meters was finalised. The drilling focused on the new deposit, Sundsberget located north of the other two deposits, and resulted in a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) of the Rönnbäcken Nickel Project (NI 43-101 Preliminary Economic Assessment).
In the same year, the Mining Inspectorate of Sweden granted Exploitation Concessions for the Vinberget and Rönnbäcksnäset deposits. They are valid for 25 years and establish the right for mining activity to take place. Furthermore, the Swedish Geological Survey classified the Rönnbäcken deposits an Area of National Interest for Mineral Extraction. The area is important for the country’s raw material supply and has good potential to support future mining activity.
